Randomly Inundated

I’ve been so busy lately but I’m gonna wrap it all up in one post that I’m calling “Randomly Inundated”. In this post, I’m gonna briefly share my thoughts on Issa Rae’s new book Awkward Black Girl and my confusion with the universal interest of Lena Dunham. Also, I travelled back to my 90s childhood this weekend and saw the amazing Jurassic World! Meanwhile, Tamia surprised us with one of my favorite albums this year and I’m still being slayed by the new Florence + The Machine album. Finally, its OITNB weekend!

Awkward Black Girl vs Not That Kind Of Girl

IMG_0903IMG_0933

It seemed like last Fall I saw Lena Dunham on every late night couch and news outlet promoting her new memoir. Before her book was even written, there was conversation about it. I think she’s a great writer and I think she worked hard for where she is but there’s just something about her that reads “privileged try hard”. Issa Rae has been someone I always loved, she’s really funny and she’s carved her own way. Back in February, I saw her on an Instagram post with Kid Fury & Crissle talking about a book. I thought it was something with beginning to brainstorm but after research, I learned her book had been out for almost a month. What? Where was she promoting this book? I definitely would’ve been out to support her. Why wasn’t she afforded the same promotional outlets as Lena? So recently I got around to reading both books and I’ll start with Lena’s Not That Kind Of Girl. I’m sure it was interesting to someone, but honestly it was just like someone typed a 300 page transcript of a Lena Dunham interview. I had a little interest in the chapter about her life after college but other than that, it was an undirected mess. I know I sound biased but I just expected so much more with the acclaim that Lena gets with everything. I finished Issa Rae’s Awkward Black Girl book this week and I loved it! Maybe its because I relate to Issa a lot more. I think she was able to capture the ups & downs of her life and see the humor in it. There were moments I actually laughed out loud at this book and that never happens. I’m not gonna just rip Lena Dunham apart, as I believe her story should be told too, I just hope that Issa’s story gets the same shine in the future. Bottom line, Awkward Black Girl is a great read and I definitely recommend. I loved it!

JURASSIC WORLD!

OMG! So I saw this in IMAX on Saturday and I LOVED it! It was so fun and it took me back to my childhood. Chris Pratt & Bryce Dallas Howard were fantastic in their roles and I can’t wait to see a sequel. Job well done!

Jurassic World: 8.5/10

Side note: Does anyone else think about the lawsuits & jail time that would actually happen after everything?

Florence + The Machine and Tamia

2015 was looking like a very boring music year. Honestly, I hadn’t been interested in anyone’s album since Jazmine Sullivan and Kendrick Lamar. Then June came around now I think I’ll definitely be getting the life that I’ve been needing from my iTunes. First, I am a STAN for Florence + The Machine! Their music is so cinematic and it takes me into a heavenly state, I’ve loved them since 2010. Their third album, How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful , is arguably their best yet. I love the production of their first two albums (Lungs and Ceremonials). The songwriting and the instruments are just flawless. This outing, it seems the band is a lot more reserved, but it works perfectly because its resulted in a more soulful project. Florence has an amazing voice and it finally gets the chance to shine on this project. I predict this being one of the best albums of the year. Tamia, on the other hand, released one of most refreshing R&B albums I’ve heard lately. Love Life is filled with mature and sultry R&B. Tamia has always  been a favorite of mine. I love her voice and she’s always presented herself as classy. She’s the perfect example of how you don’t have to scream to give a great vocal performance, she has such crisp vocals. I knew it would be a good album but I must say I was blown away and I think it will also be in my top albums of the year. I give both of these albums an A- .

OITNB binge weekend is finally here! Although, I’ve been a little slower watching this season, I think I’m in for a treat.  What I’ve seen so far makes me think it will be the best season yet.  I know there has been some criticism about the more somber tone this season but I’m loving it! I like this tone a lot more than the outrageous (and great) tone from last season. I feel the writing is amazing this year and its really touching on the emotional side of things. This show definitely has the best writers room in media. The ability to tell these diverse stories takes work and I continue to be blown away each season. So far, I give it an A!

Favorite Television of 2013

My Top 15 Television Shows of 2013:

15) How I Met Your Mother

The final season of HIMYM is gearing up to be a real treat. I’ve always found this to be a cute show. Its not “Friends” but I’ve connected with this group over the past few years. I’ll miss them come May.

14) Orange Is The New Black

While slightly overhyped, I still enjoyed the story and found it to be one of my favorite shows of the year. It has a really grasping plot and it proved to me even more how much I could never go to jail (and this just shows a women’s prison!). OITNB started its first season pretty strong and I’ll definitely be streaming the second season.

13) New Girl

New Girl is just… I love this show. Its funny, well written and I love the characters. Jess is the awkward soul in all of us, you just want to root for her. If “Friends” is the expectation of roommate groups but New Girl is the hilarious reality (did you catch my 500 Days of Summer reference?)

12) The Mindy Project

I love Mindy Kaling, so her show making this list was a given. But outside of it, I really like this show because of the diversity and I see a lot of my friends in these characters. I love her humor and this is a great platform for her.

11) Ray Donovan

Since I heard Pooch Hall was cast on this show, I’d been waiting to tune in. The plot was interesting and I always love a Hollywood setting. Liev S. does a great job in the title role of a Hollywood fixer. Some have called it “Scandal in Hollywood” but I think its much more than that and Ray will grow to become a classic character. There’s much more than shock value, the first season gave character development, top notch writing, superb acting and good drama. Definitely a new favorite.

10) Masters of Sex

I LOVE THIS SHOW! That’s all I need to say. But really, its a very intriguing plot. I think MOS could be one of the most underrated shows of the new season. Showtime has a winner with this one!

9) Graceland

Stumbled upon this show on accident this summer. Afterwards, I was tuning in every Thursday. Its great seeing the amazing Daniel Sunjata in steady work. While not groundbreaking, I think it served its purpose as a hip summer show. I’m not a huge fan of cop shows but the California setting, fresh young approach, diversity and cool edge made this one stand out.

8) Homeland

Seeing the acclaim everywhere forced me to tune in. When I finally had access to Showtime, I finally checked it out and was AMAZED! Carrie and Brody had my attention every episode and I finally saw why Claire Danes is hailed as a great actress. Its so intense and I loved it! The recent finale had my jaw on the floor, I’m interested in seeing how the show goes further with that ending.

7) The Big Bang Theory

How can you not love The Big Bang Theory? Like seriously… Sheldon is a trip though, steals every episode! #Bazinga

6) 2 Broke Girls

LOVE LOVE LOVE 2 Broke Girls! I love cupcakes and I love sitcoms, 2 Broke Girls mixes both. One of the reasons I love it is because of what it gets away with. Its very raunchy if you catch what they are saying. 2BG  is hilarious and I hope it catches on to even more fans.

5) House of Cards

WOW! SPEECHLESS! BLOWN AWAY! These are the only words to describe House of Cards. HOC is a show that you have to watch. Its scandalous, dark and thrilling. Frank Underwood is on his way to being the next Water White, Don Draper or Tony Soprano. Kevin Spacey just EMBODIES this role!  I’m counting down the days to the season 2 premiere. Sex, murder, power, envy and politics in DC make this show a MUST STREAM!

4) Veep

She may be Vice President but Selina Meyer is in charge of the girls. This show is hilarious and Julia Louie-Dreyfus is awesome in this role.

3) Girls

I’ve been watching faithfully since the series premiere 2 years ago. I believe Lena Dunham is positioning herself as the next great comedy writer. One of the reasons I love this show is the accurate portrayal of post graduate life. Also I feel like I’m going through the same points in my life as the characters in this show. I love everything about it and Lena can definitely count me in for every season.

2) American Horror Story

AHS just goes there and I love it. It also doesn’t hurt that the amazing Ryan Murphy is the brain behind it. With the new season starring Kathy Bates and Angela Bassett, I knew I would be blown away. Each season keeps me coming back and it gets better and better. Bring on the explosive season 3 finale this January!

1) Breaking Bad

Seriously, how could Walter White and this highly addictive show be anything but #1? Its sad that it had to end but it definitely went out on top. #WalterIsKing #BestShowOfALLTime #EnoughSaid
